Teen
Institute
Teen Institute is a two-and-a-half day, two-part
program for high school students which emphasizes personal growth
and leadership development. School personnel select participating students based
on their responsible character and willingness to learn.
The first phase of
the program is a day and a half (including an overnight),
during which students attend workshops and participate
in a variety of events.
The second phase is a team-building experience
called Challenge by Choice (obstacle course). Together, these two experiences
help the participants grow to understand themselves and others
in deeper ways.

Underage
Drinking Program
The Underage
Drinking Program is specifically designed for adolescents
who have been cited for a drug and/or alcohol violation. The
program is offered in conjunction with local district justices
as a possible alternative to a fine and court costs. It promotes
the well-being of high risk youth by educating young offenders
about the risks and consequences of alcohol and other drug
use, and by helping to strengthen their decision-making, communication
and coping skills.
Upon completion of the Underage Drinking
Program, a letter is sent to the referring
district justice to confirm that all requirements were successfully fulfilled. Youth
must be referred by magistrates and parents; some school
referrals are accepted.
Groups are scheduled every month. One hour formal assessments can be scheduled on an individual basis.

TCV MH/MR, Inc. After-School
Program
The Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR Inc. After-School Program provides a safe, structured and supportive environment during after school hours for thirty children, grades 1– 9, residing in the Woodland Hills School District. The program is located in the Braddock area and operates from 3:00 – 7:30 p.m. five days per week with some additional activities and outings on weekends. The After-School Program provides academic support, life skills enrichment, and recreational activities each day. The program also provides a nutritious hot meal for each child and transportation home.
After-School Staff collaborate with the Woodland Hills School District teachers and counselors to provide individualized academic support to each child in the program. Staff utilizes information provided from school supports such as report cards, progress notes, daily homework logs, and IEP’s to monitor each child’s weekly academic performance. The After-School Staff have tailored academic assistance to meet each student at his/her current learning level. Staff focuses on improving areas of concern while reviewing competencies in specific subjects. Staff partner the older youth with the younger students to study spelling and vocabulary words as well as math flashcards. Educational support is not only provided during homework time but also throughout the evening. Staff facilitates math games while walking to and from dinner, spelling quizzes during dinner, and geography games at the end of each night.
After-School Staff have also advocated with parents/caregivers to ensure that each student is in the appropriate school placement that meets their learning and emotional needs. Staff also supports parents/caregivers who may need additional support throughout the IEP process.
The After School Program is the first of three EITC initiatives being implemented into programming in the Children and Family Services Department. Thank you to Equitable Resources and UPMC Healthplan in 2007 and Equitable Resources and Highmark in 2006 for their kind contributions made through the EITC Program to aid in implementing the After-School Program.
